Left Hospital in Record Time

Thursday, April 02 2009 -

Last surgery we were told to expect a 4-5 day stay and it took something like 11 days. This time we were told a 3-5 day stay and we left after 3 days. In reality we could have checked out yesterday, had we lived anywhere near the hospital Dr. Ertl would probably have let us go. As it stands, we are spending the night in Kalamazoo to get some rest. Carol had oddball room mates shuffling in and out of her room every night she was there and just didn't get much sleep. The hotel is nice and quiet.

We spoke with Dr. Ertl again today before we left. He was on call, but still managed to sit and chat for a while. He's very happy with Carol's progress. She's resting more or less comfortably. She had one episode of phantom pain this afternoon. She was in a lot of pain that came in random spikes. She laughed, after she stopped crying, because she said that her leg was at least original. The phantom pain she was experiencing wasn't the usual iron spike through the foot or ripping off of the big toe.

We spoke with the KCMS communications director. She took a couple of pictures and is going to call Carol for an interview. Carol's surgery pictures are featured in a brochure about Dr. Ertl. By the time we left I think everyone had heard of the couple from New Hampshire. It was rather funny.

Hospital 001

We are heading out early in the morning. Depending on how Carol travels, we will either drive all the way through or find somewhere to stop and rest.
