Ertl Amputation Day 2 Part II
Thursday, June 12 2008 - health
Part one of today is here.
Early this afternoon Carol got out of bed for the first time. She took a few hesitant steps on crutches. She is very used to crutches, but was "scared" today. The physical therapist assured her that was normal. She also had some balance issues, which has to be expected given that she's lost a few pounds. She spent the rest of the afternoon into early evening in a chair half laying. Most of that time she was asleep.
Her leg actually looks really good. There wasn't any bruising or swelling that I could see. She is working hard at being able to bend the knee. It is important that she work on that now before it tightens up.
This afternoon she started suffering from muscle spasms as well as battling a fever. She didn't seem to be doing as well by the time we left (around 7:30pm) as when we got there this morning. Hopefully she will be feeling a little better tomorrow. I did take a few pictures this morning when we got there and you can see them below.
As expected she didn't remember much from yesterday. I think that tomorrow she will remember most of what happened today. She did say that last night was pretty bad. She got sick a few more times and generally didn't get any sleep.
Her room-mate was named Carol with a last name that started with B as well. We weren't all that comfortable with that and the hospital assigned them separate nurses to try and prevent any mix-ups from the duplicate initials (CB for both of them). Thankfully they moved the other Carol out by lunch time so we had a lot more room available so that we could actually put chairs in the room.
