Ertl Amputation Day 10
Carol had a good day yesterday. We just sat around and watched the football games and generally tried to relax. Money (the bird) has rejoined us and he was very happy to see Carol. We are waiting for the visiting nurse to come and change Carol's bandages. She is hoping to "jump" into the shower before the nurse gets here, but I haven't installed the hand-held shower head yet so it might not be as easy to shower as she would like.
She is currently sleeping on the couch and her mom went for a walk so I don't want to be in the bathroom where I can't hear.
Pain wise things are slowly getting better. Yesterday afternoon at about 3:30 or 4pm she started to experience severe pain, especially when standing. That is a good hour or so later than the previous day. Also last night she managed to get through the entire night with only a couple of really painful experiences. The previous night she was awake and in serious pain numerous times.
The wound itself looks marginally better. It is hard to tell because it is wrapped in clear tape to keep the vacuum. There is some blood in the vacuum tube that we are slightly concerned about. It is a small amount and the vacuum's job is to pull fluids so it isn't a major problem, just curious that it is blood at this point and not just clear fluids. We will speak with the nurse about it and see what she has to say. I really have no great hopes of her having any insights. After speaking with her, I judge her to be a young, and not really interested in what she is doing, which is the same impression Carol got. She might be completely different in person, so we will wait and see.
Today will be another lazy day. I'm going to run a few errands and get some year end financial stuff done. Carol wants to go for a ride in her new car later so we will do that. I made pot roast last night so we have lots of leftovers to eat.
Carol is able to get up on her crutches and move about, go the bathroom, etc on her own so having someone here is more a matter of convenience and prudence than anything else. The reality is, and Carol recognizes this, that she is unlikely to fall, however mentally she is still working through that fact. That is another way of saying she is really terrified of falling (for good reason) and that makes her far more cautious than she probably should be. It also means she "panics" if she feels she even slightly looses her balance. The narcotics certainly play a part in that. She will only get better; in fact she gets better everyday.
We got Carol a new phone, that actually works here. Her Verizon phone just doesn't get signal. If you are trying to reach her you can call her other number and she will give you the new one or you can call me: 603-320-4092.
I will be at work all next week, but Carol's mom will be here to help out with anything. The tentative plan is that Nancy (Carol's mom) will leave next weekend. That will depend on how confident Carol is in moving around, etc.
Just happened on your site by accident. My name is Lloyd, I am a 36 year old Ertl Amputee. My surgey was performed one year ago tommorow 15 Jan 07, I walked on the 5th of March 07, Biked in May, Ran in June and returned to work in August. I am very acitve because of this Surgery. I was the First patient to have in done in Canada. I admire your courage, as I also had to come to this decsicion somewhat on my own. I can say without any hesitation that is is the best decsion I have ever made it has given me my life back. I wish you all the best and hope you have a speedy recovery, my guess is you will (sounds like you have the right attidude). Just remember don't let anyone tell you that somthing cannot be done, especially when you are dealing with the Prosthetics people as this will be a very frustrating Process. If it doesn't feel right tell them, you should settle for nothing less than perfection, Take care and all the best.
