Lose Weight by Eating Breakfast

Thursday, June 12 2008 -

Around my house my wife and I have managed to lose 17% of our combined body weight....  that's a lot. Now consider this tidbit: neither one of us were even slightly over weight, yet together we have lost almost 50lbs.

So the secret is in the title of this post. It isn't stop eating meals, it isn't some fad diet and funky pills. It is simply eat breakfast every single day. Now you have to eat a good breakfast. I almost always ate something: poptarts, donuts, a soda and an apple pie (yum).

When I say eat breakfast these days I mean something a little healthier.

A year ago I decided to make a fruit smoothy for breakfast. I took some yogurt, a little milk, some frozen strawberries and a few other fruits that we had and tossed them into the blender, mixed well and drank it for breakfast. I drink 2 1/2 to 3 cups worth for breakfast every single day! That was the only change in my very poor eating habits. Over the next six months I lost 10lbs. My wife began drinking them shortly after I did and had a similar weight loss experience.

The rest of the weight came off the old fashioned way: no more soda (I drink 3 - 4 cups of coffee a day and it is basically brown water so not sure the no soda thing really did anything) and instead of gorging at meals eat enough to be full and stop. I lost another 10lbs over the next 3 - 4 months.

After that I joined the gym, increased my exercise routine and shed the last 10lbs. At this point I have no fat to lose period. My wife, like me started at the gym, and lost the last 10lbs.

I'll post the complete recipe soon, but like most everything I make it's more of a wing it than follow the recipe thing. As an added bonus we no longer throw out all that uneaten fruit. Now when something starts to go bad it gets tossed into the smoothy...

According to Harvard Men's Health Watch

Research suggests that breakfast eaters are leaner than those who skip the morning meal, with one study reporting that missing breakfast was associated with a fourfold increase in the risk of obesity, says the February issue of Harvard Men's Health Watch

the full posting can be read here. I don't have any scientific evidence to backup my findings, but I am missing 30lbs that strongly suggest a little breakfast can go a long way towards making a healthier, slimmer you.

There is one downside I should warn you about. Both my wife and I had to buy all new wardrobes since our old clothes simply no longer fit. That cost a fortune!
